PUPIL LEADERSHIP IN NE

In line with the school's vision of developing inspiring leaders in a dynamic community, the school has planned a whole school pupil leadership programme for NE. This pyramidal leadership framework is adopted from the school's leadership framework developed by the school's leadership committee. The pyramid consist of three sides to ensure that there is holistic development of NE based on the NE guiding principle. Each side of the triangle represents one of the three domains: cognitive, affective and behavioural domains.

At the lowest level, the NE programme targets to reach out to all pupils. Each pupil is given exposure to NE through a variety of NE related activities. Though this is the lowest level, views of the pupils are discussed and considered even at this level. For example, in 2005, many of the pupils at level 1 were involved in the National Day item titled, 'The Singapore Story'. During the practice sessions, some of the pupils provided a lot of feedback on the storyboard and added value to the story.  Pupils are exposed to NE through the integrated approach for NE in the school. NE is also infused in the school's weekly Character and Leadership Development programme.

Each class has a NE delegate. These NE delegates form the second level in the leadership framework. These pupils are given training in promoting NE within their class. They also get the class to work on NE activities such as planning NE CIP project for the 2006 National Day. While the NE delegates serve as leaders in their classes, they also help the NE Ambassadors in implementing NE activities for the school.

The level three leaders in NE are the NE delegates in CCAs. These are the CCA leaders who are the NE delegates imparting NE values to the rest of the members. Their roles include inculcating good character and behaviour among their team members, which include the NE values. For example, as a captain of the school soccer team, the team captain is informed and expected to ensure that his team members respect various races and religions, and not make racially derogatory statements during training sessions or competitions.

The NE Ambassadors at level four are carefully selected based on their leadership qualities and commitment to NE. These pupil leaders are actively involved in NE and work closely with  teachers in planning NE activities for the school. For example, they were active in developing the NE games for this website. The pupils were also part of the team which planned the NE gallery and events such as the National Day.

The level five consists of the school's student council executive committee (EXCO). The activities proposed by the NE Ambassadors are put forward to the EXCO which provides advice and endorses the activities. Upon endorsement by the EXCO, the proposal is put forward to the teachers in the NE committee for consideration. The student council EXCO ensures that the  proposals are aligned to the school's vision and mission statements.
