  UNIT 1: IMPACT OF WORLD WAR I

Did World War I change the world? Learn more about this here. In this unit, you would learn more about the war and the immediate aftermath of the war. As this unit is taught as a backdrop to the study of world developments in the 20th century, this is set as a non-examinable topic. In this unit, you will study what caused the World War I with a study of nationalism, colonial and trade rivalry, militarism and system of alliances. You will also get to know more about the immediate impact of the war such as nationalism and creation of nation-states, self-determination and social and economic instability.

This chapter prepares you to:

In what ways were the years between World War I and World War II a time of both new hopes and great troubles?

 
     
  Chapter 2: Establishing Peace

Were the hopes of the world in preventing another world war fulfilled in the 1920s? The end of the war saw efforts at peace. One example is the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. However, what was the intent of this treaty and how did the Germans react to this treaty? The end of the war also witnessed the formation of the League of Nations aimed at collective security. What were the reasons for the formation of this league. What were its level of success and failure in the 1920s? What was the role of the US in the efforts at disarmament? How was the re-construction and recovery like with specific focus on aid to Germany?

This chapter prepares you to:
• analyze the intent of the Treaty of Versailles and German reaction to the treaty
• examine the reasons for the formation of the League of Nations and its role in promoting world peace in the 1920s
• explain the efforts in disarmament in the 1920s
• analyze the effectiveness of aid given to Germany

  Chapter 3: Rise of Authoritarian Regimes

Was the rise of authoritarian regimes inevitable, and did they bring more harm than good? Let's explore this with a case study of Russia, Nazi Germany and Fascist Japan. For Russia, we will explore the reasons for Stalin's rise to power and the impact of Stalin's dictatorship on the lives of the Russian people. For Nazi Germany, we will study the reasons for Hitler's rise to power and the impact of Hitler's dictatorship on the lives of the Germany people. Finally, in studying the case study of Fascist Japan, let us take a look at the circumstances leading to the rise of the military in the 1930s. In doing so, we will also study the impact of militarism on the lives of the Japanese people.

This chapter prepares you to:
• analyze the circumstances contributing to the failure of democracy and the rise of authoritarian regimes
• examine the impact of authoritarian regimens on the people (using Russia, Germany and Japan as case studies)

Could war in Europe be avoided? In finding an answer to this question, we will study the re-armament in the 1930s and the efforts at protectionism and economic co-operation. What was Hitler's foreign policy like from 1933 to 1939? Were the appeasement policy effective? What led to the failure of the League of Nations in the 1930s? These are some questions we will try and find answers for in this chapter.
