Assignment for June Vacation 2008

The following classes are to re-design their textbook using the ACE Approach. The chapters / units you will be re-designing are:

Sec 1E1, 1E2, 1E3

  • From the Geography textbook, Chapters 2 & 10
  • From the History textbook, Chapter, Chapters 2 & 3

Sec 1A1 and 1A2

  • From the History textbook: Chapters 5 & 6

Sec 2E1, 2E2, 2A1 and 2A2

  • From the Sec 3 Social Studies textbook, Chapter 1 Singapore - A Nation In The World
  • From the Sec 3 Social Studies textbook, Chapter 2 Governance In Singapore

Sec 3E1, 3E2, 3A1, 3A2 and 3A3

  • From the Sec 3 Social Studies textbook, Chapters 2,3 and 4
  • From the Sec 3 History textbook, Units 21, 2.2 and 3.1

Instructions on re-designing the textbook

This is what you need to do:

Task 1: Develop glossary and difficult word list for your easy reference (Elements 5 and 12)

  1. Get two small exercise books (B4 size) – 1 for history and 1 for social studies.
  2. Name the exercise books as follow: For the history exercise book: 'My History Glossary and Meaning Book'. For the social studies exercise book: 'My Social Studies Glossary and Meaning Book'
  3. In the first half of the exercise book, write down the Chapter and the word, 'Glossary' and list down at least 10 words related to the Chapter and their meanings.
  4. In the second half of the exercise book, write down the Chapter and the word, 'Difficult words' and list down at least 10 words related to the Chapter and their meanings.
  5. While doing the above in the exercise books, transfer the information into the textbook as well. Highlight the glossary and meaning in green, difficult words and meaning in blue. (refer to the sample if you are not sure of this.)
  6. You must do at least 10 words for glossary and 10 difficult words per chapter.

Task 2: Highlight key points and write down key issue at the side of each paragraph (Element 6)

  1. Read through each paragraph carefully
  2. Highlight in yellow the key points in the paragraph
  3. From the highlighted points, decide on the key issue of the paragraph.
  4. Write down this key issue at the side of the paragraph and highlight it in yellow as well.
  5. Every paragraph must have highlighted words and key issue written at the side.

Task 3: Provide reference to games available (Element 7)

  1. Browse the Sembawang Secondary  Humanities Website for games on the topic.
  2. If there are games related to the topic available, draw a computer icon and write down the link and games available in the textbook. (refer to the sample if you are not sure of this.)
  3. All relevant games from the school humanities website must be mentioned in each chapter.

Task 4: Search for knowledge - Knowledge Quest (Element 8)

  1. Read up more about the chapter by getting some books from the library on the topic or surfing the net.
  2. Draw a bulb and write down new information on have found out. You can also write down the source of your information.
  3. You must do at least 5 knowledge quest per chapter. (refer to the sample if you are not sure of this.)

Task 5: Search for exciting information - Curiosity Corner (Element 9)

  1. As you read up for the knowledge quest, take note of interesting news about the topic.
  2. Draw a smiling face and write down the interesting news in the textbook, You can also write down the source of your information.
  3. You must do at least 5 interesting news per chapter. (refer to the sample if you are not sure of this.)

Task 6: Do rating (Element 11)

  1. After reading the chapter, write down a number on the top right hand corner of the 1st page of the chapter to indicate the level of difficulty of the chapter. (The ratings are : 1 - Very Difficult; 2 - Difficult; 3 - Just Appropriate; 4 - Easy; 5 - Very Easy.
  2. You have to do this rating every time you read the chapter. Thus, if you have read the chapter for the second time, cancel the first rating and write down the new rating. Make sure you are still able to see the first rating to monitor your progress.

You do not need to do Elements 1,2,3,4 and 10.

10. Varied viewpoint (not applicable for June assignment)

11. Rating (To be done at the beginning of the chapter.)

12. Finding meanings of difficult words (At least 10 words per chapter.)
